Munich: Dallmyr Fine Food Shop & Gaststatte Weichandhof Restaurant

Today I visited two places listed in the 1000 Things to Eat Before you Die book that are in Munich. Not everything you eat is a thing in that book-there are paintings, movies, books and in this case, places listed as well.

Breakfast at Dallmyr

The first is a fine food shop that sells-well-all things delicious to be found in Germany. The top floor is a coffee shop/cafe and we began with breakfast to be followed by a tremendous amount of looking. Ivan had a Bayern breakfast with meat and beer and I had the local white sausage and an omelette and Elena had a vegetarian version that was also tremendous. In the store, I bought lebkuchen and had I had more room in the suitcases, would have loaded up on far more items. The caviar and meats were really something to behold.

Dinner at Weichandhof

The second place was the Gaststatte Weichandhof which is a little Inn or Gasthaus that has a small restaurant attached. this little spot is a good 35 minutes away by Uber/Taxi from the old town where we were staying but Mimi in her book tells that this spot was transformed into an Inn in 1755 and that it is gemutlich which is the German equivalent of Hygga so I was in. I had duck and potato dumplings along with red cabbage. I had forgotten what good German red cabbage tastes like-so creamy (read, plenty of butter). The best part of my meal, however, was the gravy. OMG. Ivan had a pork chop and Elena fish AND then we all had communal dessert-first was Kaiserschmarren which is very typical of the region and is a pancake with raisins, plums, etc and we had apple strudel. To drink I ordered hazelnuissegeist aus tyrol if for no reason but to say the name. This is a hazelnut schnapps from the tyrol region. I still prefer Slovenian walnut rakia but the hazelnuisse version is not half bad…

Hazelnuissegeist aus Tyrol (and Julie)

Is Mimi correct that these things are exceptional? Yes to both.
