Grand Central Oyster Bar: Oysters & Clams (oh,my)

Elena having her Pan-Roast Oyster Stew

When in New York, I go in search of 1000 Things to Eat Before you Die.  This time, I focused on eating at Grand Central Oyster Bar which is located (as the name implies) in Grand Central Station. It has been in existence for over 100 years and Mimi Sheraton in her book calls out, specifically, this restaurant for its oysters and for its Oyster Stew or Pan-Roasts.

We choose the pan-roast as it promised to be a bit spicier and in addition to splitting that and having Oysters, we ordered another thing from the 1000 Foods list which are Clams Casino.  They also have an amazing wine list.  Exhaustively long but really varied… We both opted for a French sparkling wine.

So how did it go?  The oyster options were huge so we went with a Washington State Oyster. The Clams Casino were so good but it is hard to not like butter, breadcrumbs and bacon.  The Pan-Roast was spicy, creamy and VERY rich.  Would I go back again? In a heartbeat.
