Galaxy Mushroom and Steak Tacos

Niki came to visit and wanted to have tacos so I found the article you see below that says that there are 13 amazing taco places in San Diego.  Niki and I started out on a quest to eat at all 13.  Given both of our love of Tacos, this seemed perfectly doable.  We had a plan to eat at at lest two of the places per meal.  We started out really strong in La Jolla and had the mushroom tacos at Galaxy Cantina and Grill where the blue corn taco shells housed the most delicious sautéed mushrooms. From the list, this was one of the ones I was least enthusiastic about to try.  Mushroom?  That being said, this was an absolutely delightful taco.  The restaurant was a very bright and light-open air and had the most beautiful bar with one of the largest collection of tequila bottles I have ever seen.

The Taco Stand’s al Pastor Tacos

We then went to a more traditional place called the Taco Stand.  We waited in line and ordered the al Pastor Tacos as we were advised in the article that they were good. I do love al Pastor and these tacos have very soft, springy taco shells which I liked very much.  So far so good.

Aqui Es Texcoco Lamb and Cheese Tacos

Day two we headed to the border and ate at Aqui Es Taxcoco which was a bit different than any other tacos I have had. They specialize in lamb which they cook for eight hours wrapped in leaves.  The lamb is then shredded and can be served in a bowl with side tortillas or ordered just as a straight taco.  The menu is huge and for me pretty difficult to navigate although also in English.  Now lamb is not my go-to meat but these were really nice tacos given I don’t love lamb.  They also had a taco where the shell is made of fried cheese. I know this seems like it would be a great idea but by the time you get to the end of this article you will see that was not the best of idea.

Birria Tacos from Mariscos Y Birria

We then dropped further down into Chula and ate at a place called Mariscos y Birrial el Prieto. Now this is an interesting spot-it is two different food trucks set up across from each other with a center courtyard filled with tables. This is at the end of a very busy stirp mall comprised of this spot and an autobody spot.  As Niki is not a seafood lover, we tried the birria. These were the largest tacos I have ever eaten and the birria was really flavorful.  The juice dripped down my arm which, typically, could be considered a good thing.

Pork Tacos at Las Quatras Milpas in Barrio Logan

Now after day two I will say my stomach actually hurt. It wasn’t that I had eaten so much but I will say that most corn tacos are only good if cooked in lard. I know this and do this myself but four big taco spots later, I got that maybe I needed some salad in between this and the next batch BUT I am a slow learner so we go to day three.  We travel to Barrio Logan-one of my most favorite parts of town-stand in line for a coffee at Café Motto and then head to Las Quatra Milpas.  The line was huge and as we had read, they served pork tacos.  Choices were mostly fried pork tacos with lettuce and cheese or rolled tacos.  People wer ordering 4-6 per person so when we only ordered two the women looked astounded and I will say that waiting in that line for two tacos was a bit suspect.  We didn’t want to eat inside so we took them to go and ate on the curb.  Once again we had juice and grease dripping down our arm.  These were really flovorful and I loved the cheese and lettuce.

Salud’s al Pastor and Carne Asada Tacos

We then moved to my previously most favorite taco place called Salud. I have written about Salud before and I love this spot.  We ordered two tacos each along with the yummy street corn and settled down.  Once again,  as is the case with corn tacos, they were fried in lard.  I will say that at that exact moment I lost my will to live. My will to eat Tacos.  My will to continue with the list.

Today is now day 4. There will be no more tacos coming my way for a very, very, very long time. There might be 13 taco places to eat and they might all be really good but here is my best advise:  DON”T TRY TO EAT THEM ALL IN THE SAME WEEK.
