Malasadas: Portuguese Donuts seved Hawaiian Style

Malasadas

So one of the curious things about the 1000 Foods Book by Mimi Sheraton is that you learn that food has migrated from place to place. I found Portuguese sponge cake is now a Japanese food and here is another interesting one and that is that Portuguese donuts-malasadas-have been co-opted by the Hawaiians and are not served in Hawaiian restaurants. I tried them not in one but TWO places-had the ones at L&L Hawaiian Barbeque in Poway with my friend Terri and then again at Homestyle Hawaiian near work with Shari.  Both were yummy and a fabulous deal.  Need a fried donut? Don’t overlook the Hawaiian version of a Portuguese 1000 thing.
