Serbian Walnut Torte (and Michele & Julie)

So the last thing we made when Michele and Kristen were here to visit was a walnut torte.  Called Torta od Oraha it is an eggy torte that is easy to make and really delicious.  The recipe I used is actually in the 1000 Foods book BUT I am really watching calories so I toned the recipe down hugely.  First of all, I used sweet and low for all of the “sugar” in the original version.  There is a butter cream that I used ½ of what was called for and then still used “I can’t believe it is not butter” to cut calories.  My friends have gluten issues so instead of breadcrumbs I used gluten free flour.  Finally, it calls for brewed coffee but I found that this was too much liquid when combined with the fake butter and fake sugar.  Cut the amount.  If I did this again, I would cut a few of the egg yolks. This one calls for 6 eggs but I think it could be made with 6 egg whites and 3 or 4 yolks.  Still, this was good and while I really have 0 idea how many calories are in it, it is going to be on the lower side for torte!
