Rohat Lokum: Turkish Delight (and Sujuk for good measure)

Turkish Delight in Istanbul

I knew I would love Rohat Lokum or Turkish delight. As kids we ate Brown & Haley’s Almond Roca & Liberty Orchards Aplets & Cotlets. Turkish delight is nothing more than a fancy version of Aplets & Cotlets and I love those.  In 2007 our family went to Istanbul for Thanksgiving and were able to eat Rohat Lokum on the street. They come in so many wonderful flavors, all fruit based.  The cut squares look like jewels in their cases. The stores are things of beauty. I was able to check this one off of Mimi’s 1000 Foods to Eat Before You Die List, long before I had the book after eating them off the streets of Istanbul.

Cranberry Turkish Delight

A few weeks ago my husband told me about Atlas Market in Poway.  Not only do they have Turkish Delight in a variety of amazing flavors but another interesting thing called Sujuk.  Sujuk is a Balkan take on the fruit roll up.  Shelled walnuts are strung on a string and then dipped multiple times into a vat of boiled fruit.  I understand that grape is the most popular but I love the cranberry.
