Harry’s Bar: Birthplace of the Bellini & Fegato alla Veneziana (Venetian-Style Calf’s Liver)

While in Venice we had dinner at Harry’s Bar.  Joey had done some investigating and made us a reservation.  Harry’s is a pretty famous landmark for Venice.  It opened in 1931 by Guiseppi Cipriani who is famous for creating the Bellini.  One famous Italian food that makes the 1000 Things to Eat Before You Die and was made popular by Harry’s Bar, is Fegato alla Veneziana which is a Venetian-Style Calf’s Liver served with Polenta. this is a far cry from the over-cooked liver of my childhood. This is thinly sliced and ever so delicate.  While Harry’s Bar is a spot know for this dish, it can be found on most menus around town.  There is a quote that is attributed to Anthony Bourdain that says about Harry’s “You get a pretty good plate of food and the Bellinis are just fine. They just cost a fu*k of a lot.”  I agree with this statement. The prices were high but the portions were huge.  If ever you go, share the plates.  Even if you don’t like live, you might give the Fegato alla Veneziana a try-it must might change you mind.
