It was another dumpling day (this time with Niki)

Multi-Colored Dumplings at Steamy Piggy

Niki and I decided to spend the day devoted to dumplings. We figured we could eat two of the dumplings from the previously published CNN list (#3, Sichuan Spicy Wonton and #7 Won Ton Soup. i also wanted to try a couple from an article about San Diego that said to go to Steaming Piggy and have the burger dumpling and the Big Wow to have the gigantic bao. How did we fare?

Nutella Dumplings with Squid-Ink Wrapper

First stop was Steaming Piggy on Convoy. They no longer make the burger dumpling BUT we did have a batch of soup dumpling which are #1 on the CNN list. We also had a batch of their multi-colored dumplings (yum) the fried chicken bao sandwich and BEST OF ALL the squid ink nutella dumplings. I get that squid ink and nutella might not sound like a good combo but the dumplings worked.

Fried Chicken Bao Sandwiches

We moved onto to the Big Wow, which is not in business any longer. a new Dumpling place called Dumpling N More has taken the spot on 5th Ave in Hillcrest. They continued with the extra large Bao (we tried the Beef-Carrot and Kung Pao Chicken). We also tried #3 Sichuan Spicy Wonton (Chao Shou) from the CNN list. This is a traditional type wonton from China that is served in a hot chili sauce. It is also known for having a fair amount of sichuan peppercorn so expect to have it be a mouth-numbing experience. I will have to say that I no longer love things with sichuan pepper but the dumplings were good. We also tried #7 which Shrimp Won Ton which is the dumpling you find in wonton soup. I have loved wonton soup from the days my father would take me across the street from the New Courthouse in Seattle to eat at his favorite little corner shop that served Wor Wonton Soup. Dumpling N More’s version? Pretty good. Our favorite food we had there? The beef fried dumplings. Crispy on the bottom but soft on top.

We had planned a third stop these two were all we could manage. Two more down on the CNN list and multiple new favorites. I do like a dumpling day.
