Eating in Airports: So Many Choices….

One of things I have come to enjoy is being able to eat really good food in an airport provided by some of my most favorite chefs. While it is true, most of the food is garbage and over-priced garbage at that, I do have a few favorites that really make up for all the crappy chips I have eaten over the years. Here are my top contenders:

INK SACK at LAX (Los Angeles) by Michael Voltaggio

Ink.Sack at LAX
Bahn MI

While this is only a sandwich spot, it is one that is the creation of one of my most favorite chefs, Michael Voltaggio.  He offers really creative ideas for sandwiches and salads that are above and beyond the typical airport fair.  When my family and I went through the international terminal (Tom Bradley) this past December on the way to Laos/Singapore, we had the bahn mi.  Loved it.

Tortas Frontara at ORD ( Chicago) by Rick Bayless

Cochinita Pubil

Rick Bayless makes a mean sandwich.  One of my most favorite is the Cochinita Pibil. This marinated pork torta comes with a KILLER hot sauce that you do want on the side and then you want to be very, very careful how much you put on your sandwich AND you want to either take the extra home or buy a bottle to bring home with you.  One extra side note, have an Alfajore.  These are an Argentinian cookie that has dulce de leche sandwiches in between two cookie and then is dipped in coconut.  Yum.

Kat Kora’s Kitchen at IAD (Houston) by Kat Kora

Houston Airport

Unlike my other two choices, this one is hard to get as a take away. You have to plan your trip to allow time to sit down to eat.  The menu changes so there is not just one thing to eat but if you REALLY feel like eating something very delicious but pretty bad for you, try the lobster mac-n-cheese.  The other food items are considerably healthier and still delicious and the cocktails are innovative.

I am not giving Wolfgang Puck’s chain a #. For years I LOVED to go through airports such as O’Hare and have his specialty salads and sandwiches but my last two attempts to eat the food were so disappointing that I am listing him here only as a cautionary food note to avoid his food altogether.

And then there are those left to try…. Gordon Ramsey has Plane Food in Heathrow and Miramoto has Skewers in LAX.  So many airports and so little time….
